With the onset of great spring and summer weather, outdoor activities increase and so does our exposure to the risks associated to sun exposure. It is important to know and understand the health dangers of the sun as well as its benefits. The key is to enjoy the benefits while practicing safe sun precautions.

Plan ahead; if you are outdoors during peek exposure times (11:00 am – 4:00pm)

Pre apply sunscreen; If you know you will be exposed a pre application will have you ready in advance.

Don't forget to reapply as once is definitely not enough. Swimming and perspiring can remove even “waterproof” sun screen, frequent application may be necessary.

Choose a sunscreen with a minimum protection level of 30 SPF (Sun Protection Factor)

Cover up or seek out shade; When ever possible wear lightweight clothing to cover most often exposed extremities. Wear a hat, often we forget about the top of our head. Also, sunglasses are essential protection for delicate eyes. When ever possible choose to sit in the shade, under a tree or awning while on the patio.

Parents will need to keep an eye on young children as they will need frequent application and reminders of safe sun practices.

You can still enjoy the outdoors with a little planning and knowledge.
