Saskatoon Oil Changer – Gerald Guenett

http://theexperts.ca/blog/2016/10/19/saskatoon-oil-changer-gerald-guenett/

G OilchangesExpert

October has arrived, do you know what that means? Pumpkin spiced everything has already started taking over. Did you know we now offer pumpkin spice oil changes? How do we do it? It's such a complex process even I don't quite understand it! *

During the month of October everyone seems to be talking about Halloween, but not me.

I like discussing Thanksgiving. It's the one time of year everyone thinks about and talks about what they are thankful for.

What am I thankful for? I'm thankful for my family and friends, I'm very thankful to work for a company that puts our customers first. It is our mission to be the best oil change in Saskatoon, and, thanks to our customers, I believe that to be coming true. So I am also thankful for all of the customers of Lubrication Station supporting our 100% local business and allowing us to continue to serve you every day (except Sunday, everyone needs a break).

Speaking of being thankful, have you noticed when it's been a long time since you've had your last oil change your car may start to run rough? Maybe an irregular idle? Or poor fuel economy? After you drain the dirty oil and put the clean in the engine those things start to improve. Have you ever thought that your car could be grateful for that service? Lubrication Station understands that not everybody is in the same place financially and can't always get every service as required, but when you are able to perform extra services on your vehicle it becomes very thankful.

October is also the month a lot of us don't look forward to because of one thing not everyone is fond of. It's a four letter word I personally don't like, that's right, snow. Generally, it never fails to snow right around the end of October, which means that winter is coming fast. People start thinking “am I ready for winter?” and your vehicle is no exception to this as once that cold weather starts to hit it starts to act differently. We are here to help prevent a drastic change in your vehicle's performance through this weather changeover.

Be wise, Winterize!

That's something we say a lot around this time of year. At Lubrication Station we do our best by asking when was your last oil change? When was the last time you had an engine flush or a fuel-system cleaning? Do you know when the radiator system was last flushed?

The reason these questions are important is that our winters get very cold - insides of engines and fuel systems collect moisture, sludge, and carbon, that can and will harm your vehicle if not attacked regularly.

So before the weather changes come by Lubrication Station so we can help make sure your vehicle is winter ready.

Thanks for reading and for supporting a local company!

Wagging Tails = Happy Dogs

True or false? Your dog's wagging tail is indeed usually a sign of happiness or excitement. Dogs communicate their happiness to people or other animals by wagging their tails. Research has even shown that dogs don't wag their tails when they are alone, even if they are content. Wagging is truly a communication meant for others.

It's important to know the difference between a true wagging tail and other tail movements. Some dogs will move their tails when they are anxious or nervous, and it will be a different type of movement from their genuine wag. It's usually easy to tell the difference with your own dog, whose non-verbal communications you know very well. As always, with strange dogs you must use common sense and caution, to make sure the wag is a wag, and not a warning.

Purring Cats = Happy Cats

This is one myth that is not always true. Cats also purr when they are in pain or distress, and when they're scared. The purring sound (or action, for your cat) is thought to be comforting to the cat.

It's also hypothesized that the frequency of purring, between 25 and 150 Hertz, can promote healing. This could be another reason cats purr when they are injured. Although a purring cat is not always a happy cat, you'll probably find that the vast majority of time that is exactly why your cat purrs.

Saskatoon Seniors Wellness & Community Pharmacist - Alana Berg

http://theexperts.ca/blog/2016/10/19/saskatoon-seniors-wellness-community-pharmacist-alana-berg/

We change a lot as we get older.  We grow wiser and richer in life experience.  As a “young” person myself, I am still in full work and parenting mode.  I often notice that my senior clientele seem to smile at me as if they have a secret. I imagine them saying, “slow down, stop and smell the roses.  It goes by fast enough.”

Not only does our view on life and its priorities change with each decade, but our physical bodies change too.  It is normal for blood pressure to gradually increase as we age.  It is also normal for our kidneys to slow down. We lose muscle as we get older, as well.

All of these changes can affect how our bodies handle medications.  For example, some types of medications used to lower high blood pressure might not work as well for an elderly client compared to a younger patient. Additionally, the target numbers for blood pressure get higher with age to account for this natural change.

Because our kidneys slow down, drugs that need to be cleared from the body through the kidneys often need lower doses and closer monitoring.  Your doctor will do annual blood work to check your kidney function.  This information can be used by your doctor or your pharmacist to help decide what dose of medication you should receive.

Losing muscle is also a normal part of aging.  This loss means that our bodies end up with a higher fat component.  This can affect the dosing of medications, as well.  Some drugs are stored in the fat tissues of the body and released over time.  With the higher fat component some drugs may build up in this fat resulting in a longer duration of action.  This is notable with some sleeping medications that can last too long and put the elderly patient at risk of falling.

It's also important to note that our priorities around medications may change with time, as well. We may start to feel more focused on our daily quality of life, than on our desire to prevent disease.

There is a lot to talk about when it comes to medications and the elderly.

Book an appointment with me for a full assessment today, call Cheetham's Pharmacy at 306-653-5111.

Saskatoon Recreational Vehicles – Tom Oakes

Here at the Oak Centre RV Mall we hope your season continues to be everything you wished for. Once you are back home it will be time for most to store your rig away till next season. I will touch on some basic procedures here to remind any seasoned veterans or assist those new to the RVing lifestyle.

While a good cleanup is nice and makes your rig seem neater when you re-open in spring, it is even more important to get all groceries and food residues out and cleaned up. Mice are able to smell food and can sneak through what seems to be impossibly small openings. Aside from the mess they will leave, they can also wreak havoc inside your unit.

There are numerous ways to ensure you have no rodent issues, aside from the thorough cleaning. Dealers can provide a sachet-type product that offers essential oil smells. These chase mice away yet are harmless to pets and small people. Another solution is having the dealer spray the underside of the coach with a product that also stops the mice before they even attempt entry. You can further reduce the likelihood of mice by staying away from grass and brush when choosing where to leave your RV for the winter. While I have no experience with electronic emitters that chase mice away, there are people who tell me they work well. Just be sure you will have continuous power or there may be a window of time that allows mice to move in.

Moving on, remember that once the unit is winterized it is strongly recommended that you remove the deep cycle 12v battery and get it inside a warmer environment to prolong its life for extra years. It will likely drain down if it stays hooked up and is therefore susceptible to early cell failure due to cold temperatures.

RVs have a Carbon Monoxide / smoke detector that has a 9v battery as a power source. You may want to disconnect this and reconnect in spring. Side note – I've been informed that 9v batteries are a possible fire hazard as they can potentially short across the terminals and cause heat and sparking. They should be taped across the top to eliminate this concern in your RV and your house.

Winterization is a subject of its own, but I have a reminder that I will slide in here in case you tackle this project soon. Often, people servicing their own RV will run antifreeze through the lines and complete the flow through each tap-set and toilet. However, every so often we sell a new outside shower assembly to someone who simply forgot about this area. This can easily happen, as in some cases it is a rarely used option.

How Often Should I Wax My Car?

We get this question a lot as many people consider this part of car appearance care as an 'extra', something to do on a rare 'special' occasion in comparison to a regular planned event. Most car owners are on top of their vehicle's maintenance requirements (oil changes, brakes up to snuff, tires are good) and the like but the car appearance part of things beyond when it's time to take it through a car wash is where that part of things can stop for some.

When your car comes out of the factory, the paint and clear coat are right at their optimum stage for protection. From there it is up to you, the owner. If you've ever looked at your car on a sunny day on a bit of an angle, you will likely see what we in the trade refer to as 'spider webbing'. This circular effect is from light scratches going into the paints clear coat and, over time and without care, will continue to deteriorate the exterior protection of your car. The cause of this is pretty straight forward. When you are driving, stuff hits your car (bug guts, sand/debris and what not); when you go through a car wash, some washes are more aggressive than others on your paints surface – Have you ever seen a large dirty work truck go into a wash and come out clean?

You're next so you grab hold of the same brush as that guy and use it to gently lather soap on your valuable ride - your intent was good but your actually brushing gravel around your exterior? ; and so on. If you have no wax protection remaining on your car it's pretty self explanatory what's happening to your car's exterior.

So how often should you put wax on? Well the short answer is...that depends. Do you store your vehicle inside or out? How often do you wash it? How do you wash it? What kind of conditions does it go through? How long do you want to have it looking as good as you can? Is resale value important to you? Many wax manufacturers recommend every 45 days or so under normal 'wear and tear'. With the technology in some of the waxes today, the wax can last much longer. For example, in our shop we have a product that is good for 6 months at a time. It actually creates another barrier over the clear coat at a higher level than 'regular wax' does.

How to tell: There are a simple way or two of determining if it's time for another coat of wax or not: When you wash your car, does it still bead up nicely or does the water seem to form large 'sheets' on the surface? Beads=wax. Also, when you're done washing the car and it's dried off, take a dry terry cloth and fold it into a palm sized square. Press it down firmly on your car and twist it back and forth. If it squeaks...likely time for wax.

With our Auto Spa Car Appearance System, we have a number of clients that allow us to perform quarterly appearance care to their vehicle. Along with decontaminating the vehicles surface, we will hand wash, hand dry, test the wax that's left, determine if it is time to polish it (a topic for another day), and put a protective coat on the vehicle so it is as ready for the changing season as you are. This time of year, it is ideal for protecting your car from salt, ice and the wear and tear that makes new cars grow old before their time. Is this age appropriate?

We get asked this question and many more like it on a daily basis here at the Sandbox. Is this too young for me? Is it too short for my age? I'm a grandma, can I wear that? The list goes on.

To us, age appropriateness is more about owning your own style and feeling comfortable in the style choices you are making. What works for one middle aged woman, may look totally silly for the next one. Style is subjective and so is age. As we get older, our health may start to dictate what we can and cannot wear ie(no more heels), so in the meantime have some fun will style and don't put yourself in the age appropriate box. You want to purchase clothes that look good on YOU,feel like YOU, and make YOU, YOU!!! You get what we're saying. When you see an item of clothing that you are immediately drawn to, and then automatically think,if I was 20 years younger, stop and rethink it,”how can this work for me now, where I am in my life”? We are not saying that this will work everytime, some items just need to remain in teen land, but it works more often than not.

So to get our advice off the ground,we have conducted a little experiment. We experiment a lot at the Sandbox. We have done this one before, but this time we let our two fashion conscious staff members Talia (20s) and Jamie (50s), put their own outfits together for themselves and not each other. (See right) They were given the tunic/dress( younger piece and brand ) and nothing else.Neither one knew what the other one was choosing until the photo shoot. After each photo was taken in their own outfit,we got them to switch. This is the tunic/ dress that Talia and Jamie were given to style for the themselves.

Talia styled this item as a dress, as she is 5 feet tall, kept her legs bare for a youthful look, added a funky statement necklace, purple oversized bag, textured knit bomber style jacket and cute ankle boots.

Jamie styled this as a tunic, she is also 5 feet tall. To make this piece work for her,she added a black legging, which makes the shortness of the tunic/dress irrelevant. She also picked a bootie, but with the added black legging is a more streamlined look. She chose a charcoal  jean jacket, black fringe purse and fun earrings to complete the look.

Both styles reflect each woman's personality, are “appropriate” for each woman's age, even though most people would consider the tunic to be “younger”.  And then they switched outfits.

While some elements work on both women, you can see why overall, these looks were much better ( and “appropriate”) the first time.

Even though we do this for a living, it still amazes us how much you can change an outfit just by the accessories you add.

However! It's clear from our little experiment that just because an item may look too “young” or “old” doesn't mean it can't be maturified or youngified. (Those are officially real words--we invented them, just for you.)

10 Bonus TIPS for Dressing

  1. Develop a style that is YOU from the inside out.

  1. If that style is very feminine, look for fabrics that drape and have some softness, they don't have to be overly frilly or lacey to be feminine.

  1. If your lifestyle is casual, look for fabrics that move easily with your body, that are comfortable but great quality, so they don't stretch out and look saggy.

  1. Make sure your clothes fit your body--find a good seamstress and have them altered to your shape. We can't stress this enough!

  1. Jeans are a key staple. If you like comfort, look for ones with some stretch. Make sure you have a couple darker jeans in plainer washes, these are dressier, classic and won't date too quickly. For casual wear, don't be afraid to try some distressing or even a little rip here and there. For women who own their style and are young at heart, jeans are a great way to maintain their youthful side.

  1. Donate jeans that are 5+ years old.

Washes and fabrics of jeans change yearly,so unless your jeans are in  great condition, fit you well, and are still in style, get rid of them.

  1. Hem at least one pair of jeans for flats and another for heels. Wear them with a funky ankle boot or ballet flat, a strappy sandal or a cowboy boot, whatever is your style. No need to hem a Boyfriend Style Jean as they are meant to be rolled.

8.Think like a French woman---less clothes, but of higher quality, especially when is comes to classic basics. When you're 20 and your clothes are the latest trends, they're more disposable. As you mature you want your clothes to last longer, so look for the best fabrics you can afford. This makes ALL the difference in how well they wear, wash, and keep their shape and colour. Having said that, adding a few fun, less expensive pieces each season is a great way to express your personality, especially for social wear.

  1. Dressing in clothes that fit and flatter you and show an understanding of current fashions will keep you ageless.

  1. Don't show off too much skin. Mini-skirts and baring excessive décolletage will make you look like you're trying too hard. Moderation is classy.

All that said, much of dressing your age is about your body type, attitude, and confidence. The most important thing is to wear clothes that makes you feel like your best self. Just because you hit a certain age, doesn't mean you have to change your style, you may just have to tweak it a little, so it aligns with the beautiful woman you are today.

Ladies, we love helping you choose clothes that fit and flatter you, complementing your style and age! Hope to see you soon, on Broadway...

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is a system with matched components so important?

A matched system is important for a variety of reasons. One is comfort. When all your components are properly sized to your home, you can control exactly how much heating or cooling you need so you can relax. Also, a properly sized matched system enables every component to perform as designed, meaning proper cycle times are maintained, humidity is controlled, and system sound is minimized.

Another reason matched systems are important is efficiency. Most systems people buy are too large for their homes, which uses more energy than needed for your home. A matched system outlined by a dealer who has completed a load calculation for your home provides just the right amount of heating and cooling you need so you get the most value for your utility dollar.

How often should I change my air filter?

At the risk of telling you something you're tired of hearing, replace the air filter in your furnace on a regular basis. Dirty air filters reduce the amount of air flowing through a system and make the furnace work harder to maintain the temperature. How often you change the filter depends on the type of filter you use, if you have pets, and the size of your equipment. Please give us a call and we can give you proper guidance.

Why should I switch to a high efficiency air filter?

Proper air filtration is just as important to the health of your heating and cooling system as it is to the health of your family. Without proper filtration, dust and dirt can build up on your system which impacts operation and efficiency. A high efficiency filter will remove more dust, dirt, pollen, mold, and other particles from the air. If you suffer from allergies or other respiratory problems, you should strongly consider a high efficiency filter. No matter what type of filter you have – make sure you change it regularly.

The 3 P`s of Your Life

If you are like me, you've most likely had times in your life where you came to a crossroad and you just didn't know what to do. We can't hardly escape life without reaching the fork in the road where we simply have to make the tough call. Sure it's an uneasy feeling, and at times frightening when we have major decisions to make especially when it affects our family, walk with God, calling and career.  I've learned to follow the 3 P's whenever I reach those forks in the road and don't know what to do.

PRAYER -

The smartest thing that anyone can do is to take time to really seek God for wisdom in these moments. I've learned that when I go to God in prayer and ask Him to lead me and guide my steps; he is always faithful to show me the right way. It's easy to get so busy or distracted with the decision that we forget that we truly have a Higher Power that will give us the strength to do the right thing. The Bible says, “God is a VERY present HELP in the time of trouble!” The next time you find yourselves in trouble or facing a difficult decision, look for God and just know that He will lead you.

PEACE -

Anytime I have to make a difficult decision in my life, the very thing that I look for is peace. A lack of peace always means that God is telling you, “No,” or “Wait!” The Bible teaches us that God is not the author of confusion, but of peace. Usually God's way of speaking to us is to cause or allow confusion in our minds. I've learned that God always speaks to us according to peace. The stronger that you have peace about something, the more likely the chance that God is giving you the green light. If you do not have the green light, then God is saying, “Pause!”

PAUSE -

This is where a lot of us struggle, especially when we want the answer now! However, it never hurts to wait after you have asked God for direction. Sometimes the right thing to do is simply pause. The Bible tells us, “Be STILL and know that I am God!” Psalms 23 says, “He leads us beside the STILL waters!” Many times God is showing us that we need to pause. If God gives you the pause signal in your heart and mind, then follow that and get still. God always speaks to us the most when we are still.

Ask-the-Electrical-Expert-–-Russel-Fossum

Are there Fire Hazards Hidden in Your Walls

Most people know that using frayed extension cords and burning candles unattended are unsafe practices, yet about 370,000 house fires in the US still claim lives and cause billions of dollars in damages every year. Some major causes of house fires have nothing to do with user error and everything to do with fire dangers hidden in your walls. Watch for signs of problems with your electrical wires and have them fixed without delay to prevent putting your home and family at risk.

Warning Signs of Electrical Hazards

  • Circuit breakers trip or fuses blow

    continuously.

  • Touching appliances plugged into the wall

gives you a slight electric shock.

  • A persistent burning smell comes from a

specific appliance or room in your home.

  • Plugs easily fall out of outlets.

  • The lights flicker.

  • Outlets often spark when you plug

    appliances in.

  • Light switch plates feel warm to the touch.

  • You find wiring that has been gnawed on

    by rodents or insects.

  • Your home has been flooded or

    experienced other water damage.

The best way to tackle a possible electrical hazard is to call an electrician to come take a look at your wiring. Now consider the top four fire dangers lurking behind your walls and causing these problems.

Old Wiring

Electrical wiring is only meant to last 30 to 40 years. If you just moved into a new home, this isn't a huge concern, but if you live in an older home, you might have no idea how old the wiring is. It may be easy for the circuits to become overloaded since older fuses were only meant to handle 30 amps of power compared to today's 200-amp fuses.

Having the wiring replaced is something electricians consider on a case-by-case basis. Have an electrician survey your home so he can recommend the best course of action to bring your wiring up to code.

Aluminum Wiring

Old wiring isn't just a fire hazard because of low amperage capacities; it may also contain aluminum wires. This was the material of choice in the 60s and 70s, but we now know that aluminum oxidizes and corrodes faster than modern copper wiring. You can check for the word “aluminum” embossed on any exposed sections of wiring to discover if you have this fire danger hidden in your walls. An electrician can perform an even more thorough search.

The first solution is to install “pigtails,” or copper connectors at receptacles and circuit breakers. This is a temporary fix until you create a plan of action for rewiring your home.

Loose Outlets

Do you have any outlets in your home that have trouble gripping plugs? If the cord falls out easily, the blades inside the electrical outlet have become loose. This isn't just a nuisance; the loose connection can generate a lot of heat and start a fire.

The best advice here is to replace outlets as soon as you notice plugs easily coming loose.

Arc Faults

If you have ever seen a spark fly from a power outlet, you just witnessed an arc fault. This can also happen out of sight behind the wall if drilling or hammering punctures the insulation surrounding wiring traveling there.

The scary thing is that spotting hidden arc faults is nearly impossible until they start a fire. Fortunately, you can prevent this from happening by upgrading your circuit breaker to an arc-fault circuit interrupter, or AFCI. This senses abnormal electrical sparks and shuts down the circuit before it overheats.

Regina Pharmacy Compounding - Andrew Gilbertson

Compounding Answers from Hill Ave Drugs

Do you have questions about pharmacy compounding? We have answers. Pharmacy compounding is a long-established tradition that offers customized care to meet the specific needs of individual patients.

Have you ever wished your child's medicine tasted better, so they would accept it without a fuss? Or struggled to cut a prescription tablet in half because the pill wasn't manufactured in the strength you required? Perhaps an ill loved one could have benefited from having multiple medications combined into a single dose. Compounding pharmacists provide solutions to all these problems, and more.

Ask your prescriber or a pharmacist at Hill Ave Drugs today about customized compounding, or read on for more information…

What is compounding?

Pharmacy compounding is the art and science of preparing customized medications for patients. Its practice dates back to the origins of pharmacy, although compounding's presence in the pharmacy profession has changed over the years. In the 1930s and '40s, the majority of prescriptions were compounded. With the advent of mass drug manufacturing in the 1950s and '60s, compounding declined as the pharmacist's role as a preparer of medications quickly changed to that of a dispenser of manufactured dosage forms. However, this “one-size-fits-all” approach to medication meant that some patients' needs were not being met.

Within the last few decades, however, compounding has experienced a renaissance as modern technology and innovative techniques and research have allowed more pharmacists to customize medications to meet a patient's unique needs.  Hill Ave Drugs is proud to have taken on the challenge of compounding custom medications.

How does compounding benefit me?

There are several reasons why prescribers and pharmacists provide compounded medications for patients. The primary reason for compounding is to avoid patient non-compliance, which means the patient is either unable or unwilling to use the medication as directed. Many patients are allergic to preservatives or dyes, or require a dosage that is different from the standard drug strengths.

With a physician's consent, a compounding pharmacist at Hill Ave Drugs can:

  • Adjust the strength of a medication

  • Avoid unwanted ingredients, such as dyes,

    preservative, lactose, gluten, or sugar.

  • Add flavour to make the medication more palatable

  • Prepare medications using unique delivery systems.

For patients who find it difficult to swallow a capsule, a compounding pharmacist may prepare the drug as a flavoured liquid suspension instead. Other medication forms include topical gels or creams that can be absorbed through the skin, suppositories, sublingual troches, or even lollipops.

Can my child – or my elderly parent – take compounded medication?

Yes! Children and the elderly are often the types of patients who benefit most from compounding. It is common for parents to have a tough time getting their children to take medicine because of the taste. A compounding pharmacist can work directly with the physician and the patient to select a flavouring agent, such as bubblegum, grape, tutti frutti, or vanilla butternut, which provides both an appropriate match for the medication's properties and the patient's taste preferences.

The compounding pharmacists at Hill Ave Drugs can help patients who experience chronic pain. For example, some arthritic patients cannot take certain medications due to gastrointestinal side effects. With a healthcare practitioner's prescription, a compounding pharmacist may be able to provide these patients' anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications with topical preparations that can be absorbed through the skin. Compounded prescriptions frequently are used to ease pain, nausea, and other symptoms for hospice patients as well.

Is compounding expensive?

Compounding may or may not cost more than conventional medication. Its cost depends on factors such as the type of ingredients and equipment required, plus the time the pharmacist spends researching and preparing the medication. Fortunately, compounding pharmacists have access to pure-grade quality chemicals which dramatically lower overall costs and allow them to be very competitive with commercially manufactured products.

What kinds of prescriptions can be compounded?

Almost any kind! Compounded prescriptions are ideal for any patient requiring unique dosages and/or delivery devices.

Compounding applications can include:

  • Hormone replacement therapy (HRT)

  • Hospice

  • Pediatrics

  • Pain management

  • Ophthalmology

  • Dentistry

  • Otic (for the ear)

  • Dermatology

  • Neuropathy

  • Veterinary

  • Sports medicine

  • Infertility

  • Wound therapy

  • Podiatry

  • Gastroenterology

  • And many more!

Does my prescriber know about compounding?

Prescription compounding is a rapidly growing component of many physicians' practices, but some may not realize the extent of compounding's resurgence in recent years due to today's climate of aggressive marketing by drug manufacturers. Ask your healthcare practitioner about compounding, or get in touch with a compounding pharmacy – one that is committed to providing high-quality compounded medications in the dosage form and strength prescribed by the practitioner. Through the triad relationship of patient, prescriber, and pharmacist, all three can work together to solve unique medical problems.

Is custom compounding right for you? Ask your healthcare practitioner or Janice, Michaeline, Gavin or Andrew at Hill Ave Drugs today about the benefits of personalized prescription compounding.

Due to customer demand we now offer Maternity Bras!

These are not your typical white or beige yukky old bras that look like they were designed and made in an armoury.  Oh no way!  We have found you pretty, coloured designer nursing bras from the super model, Heidi Klum!

These Bras are cotton lined, designed for comfort with six hook adjustments in the back, and drop down cups for baby's lunchtime!  But they are so pretty and are available with matching panties so you don't have to sacrifice being a woman while you are a mom!

The best time to come in for a fitting is about a month before your due date.  We will fit you in a size that is a little bigger in both the cup and band size, because you will generally increase in size in that last month and in the first week after birth.  It's good to have 2 bras at this time.

Once you have settled into breastfeeding, after about 2- 3 months, it's normal to find that these bras need replacing already.  They've been worn day and night, saturated in milk and sweat and washed frequently by machine.  Come in for another fitting and it might be time for a different size at that time as well.

Besides, it's time to show us the new baby!  Congrats!

If you have any questions regarding the fit of your bra, please give us a call at 306-531-6750. We would be happy to help!

Red Deer Hot Tub And Spa - Wholesale Hot Tubs

hot tubs and spas

As we are coming into the fall season it is time to prepare your hot tub for the winter ahead of us.

Many people are starting their hot tubs up for the winter season and many others are closing them down to head south for the winter.

Hot Tub Wholesale offers a “winterization” program, to prepare and winterize your hot tub to protect it from damage from frozen lines or pumps and fittings.  When draining it for the winter it is important to be sure all the water is removed from the lines as well as from the pump. And proper antifreeze is used to protect your hot tub.  If this is not completed properly, frozen lines could cost thousands to repair.  Hot tub Wholesale drains the hot tub, removes the filter vacuums out any remaining water and opens any fittings around your pump and removes the water from those areas as well, and adds anti-freeze to protect it for the winter months.  Call us today and we would be happy to get you booked in for this service.

As well as winterizing this time of year it is a good idea to drain and refill your hot tub to be ready for the season ahead.  By draining and refilling your hot tub in September or October it will allow you to get through the worst of winter before you have to drain and fill it again.  Before draining your hot tub it is a good idea to use a good cleaner such as Calypso Cal Check.  This is a good quality pipe cleaner that is used to clean calcium and scale build up in the lines and work towards keeping your hot tub water clean and clear. Hot Tub Wholesale carries a great quality line of hot tub chemicals and cleaners.  Hot Tub Wholesale also provides a drain and fill service for your hot tub cleanings.

As we mentioned last month it is time to check your hot tub cover.  A heavy or old cover provides very little efficiency.  We have new covers on sale for as little as $420 call or stop in and for customers living out of town, we ship our products across western Canada.   Hot Tub Wholesale 403-986-1999.

Red Deer Carpet and Upholstery Cleaner - Paolo Mancuso

Ask the Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning Expert – Paolo Mancuso

Q: Does getting my carpet cleaned improve my indoor air quality?

A: What is indoor air quality (IAQ)? It's a term referring to air quality within homes and buildings as it relates to the health of occupants. It's affected by things like microbial contaminants (mould, bacteria), micro-particulates of soils (household dust) and other organic pollutants such as pet dander, tobacco smoke, dust mite feces and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Micro-particulates of soils, organic pollutants and VOCs that are in the air eventually cling to all surfaces as well as carpets. Carpets need to be periodically cleaned; however, in the short term, by holding onto the soils/pollutants, carpets keep them from being airborne, which minimizes the amounts floating in the air. Unless a carpet is at soil saturation, it acts as a sink for dirt, keeping particles from floating in the air and adversely affecting your IAQ. So, IAQ is not significantly improved by carpet cleaning. The greatest improvement occurs when there is regular sweeping, dusting and washing of all surfaces, not just vacuuming and cleaning of carpets. Carpet cleaning is just a small part of improving IAQ.

Other ways to improve IAQ are to 1) ensure sufficient air exchange, frequently replacing stale air with fresh, and 2) use furnace filters of a minimum 1200 MPR rating (Micro Particle Performance) or 12 MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value). Contrary to what you see advertised, there is no evidence that cleaning your furnace ducts significantly improves IAQ. Call us at 403-347-1845 or visit our website at www.mancusocleaning.com for more factual information on this topic.

Red Deer Floweriest - Laura Cadrin

http://theexperts.ca/blog/2016/10/19/red-deer-floweriest-laura-cadrin/

Ask the Flower Expert – Laura Cadrin

How to find a local flower shop

These days it is easy to look up flower shops on google and call them directly when you wish to place a flower order. What is not apparent is that there are companies out there that are not actually flower shops. What you see is a list of flower shops in the area you are sending flowers. Some of them will tell you that they are local however, they are not actually flower shops but on line order takers. They will take your order, then pass it along to a real florist to fill after they take their own cut off your order amount. They offer special deals like free delivery if you order through them but they are not delivering your flowers.

They then call a flower shop in the area and put the order through at a reduced rate. Once the flower shop deducts local taxes and delivery, there is even less of your money left over for the actual order.

What you thought you were getting is either something totally different or much smaller than you had anticipated.

You can avoid getting caught up in this by ensuring that you check for an actual local phone number and address on the flower company you choose. These type of companies generally pay a great deal of money to be first on the google page and do not have information on their whereabouts listed on the page.

Either call your florist directly or shop their official website for more of a visual selection but be sure that they are a local company.  You will be supporting a local business while ensuring that your money is being spent on your order and not on a go between!

Tips to Avoid being fooled by Flower Order

Gatherers:

  • Check the Home and About Us pages for the physical address of the business. If they do not provide it, consider calling another florist.

  • Check the Contact Us page for a local phone number. It should match the area code of the location to where your flowers are being delivered. If the contact information has an email address only, be suspicious.

  • When calling, ask for the business' location and driving directions. If they fail to provide these details, consider calling a different florist.

  • Be cautious about companies that charge relay fees, same-day fees, service fees, shipping fees and handling fees. Local florists generally charge for delivery but the other surcharges are completely avoidable when ordering direct from the florist who will actually make your arrangement.

I hope your flower ordering experience is a great one. Call us today and send flowers that go from your heart….to theirs.

Harmony Care Home – SL4-SL4D –

Long Term Care

Do you have a loved one who has been assessed as requiring SL4, SL4D or Long Term Care? There are options for these levels of care.

Harmony Care Home in Red Deer is a facility that provides the highest quality care for individuals who have been assessed SL4, SL4D, Long Term Care and Palliative Care.

Our facility is a 12 bed, residential style home, with a large, park-like, secure yard, that clients can easily access at their leisure.

Harmony Care Home staffing is very consistent.  We maintain one of the highest staff/client ratios in the industry.  Our long term staff, provide a safe, familiar environment that clients and families can trust.

SL4 – Clients are encouraged to maintain their independence as much as possible. Care plans are developed with the clients' wishes respected and based on the individual client's daily needs, with support given accordingly.

SL4D - The staff/client ratio is crucial in dementia care.  Individuals with dementia need extra time to process information.  Facilities that are understaffed and those that are task oriented cannot provide the optimum care. If staff have time to provide the care at a pace that the client can manage it reduces the client's anxiety and therefore reduces the incidents of resistance to the care. In time the trust that is built between staff and client increases the client's quality of life, as their physical, emotional and spiritual needs are met. Harmony is a locked facility, providing a secure environment for SL4D clients.

Long Term Care – Harmony Care Home is equipped to manage clients' long term care needs.  Electric beds, therapeutic mattresses, therapeutic chairs, mechanical lifts, and nursing care ensure our clients receive optimum long term care.

The family of individuals in care also need ongoing support.  Small specialized facilities with consistent staffing such as Harmony Care Home are better able to provide families with the support they need. Families can rely on the experience of the staff to help guide them through the many challenges of having a loved one with in care.

Palliative Care – Our compassionate, knowledgeable staff provide a loving environment for clients and their families, supporting them through the end of life journey.

As a private facility Harmony Care Home can accept clients who have been living outside the central Alberta area including out of province, allowing families the ability to have their loved ones close.

Red Deer Learner - Ken Coulton

ask-the-learning-expert-ken-coulton

As a parent, you may ask, “What is the 'secret behind the A'?” While having effective study skills may be overlooked on the academic journey, we've seen this be the tipping point in making good students into great students. Here are 9 good study habits for your tween or teen to help set him or her up for a productive school year.

  1. Get Organized. A planner can help your child keep everything organized and students should write down assignments, appointments, and to-do lists. Ask him or her to review items in the planner at both the beginning and end of the day to stay on track.

  1. Know the Expectations. Students shouldn't have any surprises when it comes to how and what they will be graded on. By middle school and high school, most teachers will provide a course outline or syllabus, which can serve as a guide for the semester. If expectations aren't clear, don't wait until a bad report card comes in the mail. Your student should feel comfortable approaching teachers with questions about grading and assignments at any time. If this is not the case, it may be time for you as a parent to step in.

  1. Designate a Study Area. Help your child by providing a quiet, well-lit, low-traffic space for study time. Take it one step further and institute a “communications blackout” policy with no cell phones or instant messaging allowed until schoolwork is done.

  1. Develop a Study Plan. First things first: students need to know when a test will take place, the types of questions that will be included and the topics that will be covered. From there, your student should create a study plan and allow ample time to prepare – there's nothing worse than cramming the night before an exam. You can help by buying a wall calendar and asking him or her to assign topics and tasks for each day leading up to a due date or exam. Setting goals for each session is also key to success.

  1. Create a Study Group. Working in groups can help students when they're struggling to understand a concept and can enable them to complete assignments more quickly than when working alone. Keep groups small and structured to ensure the maximum benefit to participants and reduce distractions.

  1. Practice Active Listening. It's important for students to concentrate and avoid distractions when an instructor is presenting. Some tips to share with your child include: try concentrating on the main points being made, think about what the speaker is saying and pay attention to how things are said (gestures, tone of voice, etc.). They should avoid talking or thinking about problems when listening. If a teacher says “This is important” or “I'll write this on the board,” there's a good chance students will see the concept on an exam.

  1. Review Test-Taking Strategies. It is normal for your son or daughter to feel stressed when taking an exam. However, there are certain strategies that will help him or her manage the stress and do his or her best on the exam. First, make sure that your child arrives on time and tries to stay relaxed. Students should be sure to read all of the directions on the exam and pace themselves so as not to feel rushed. You can let your child know that it's OK to skip around on a test, if allowed, as he or she may be more comfortable with certain topics than others.

  1. Read Actively. It's all too easy for students to skim over an assigned book chapter and not know the main points of what they just read. Help your student to practice active reading by asking him or her to note the main idea of each passage and look up unfamiliar words or concepts. Make an outline of the chapter or create flow charts and diagrams that help map out the concept at hand. After each section, have students write a summary in their own words and come up with possible exam questions.

  1. Look to the Future. For some students, college may seem like an intangible event in the very distant future, but in reality, these aren't so far off. Starting early can be an immense help in Navigating the college admission process. Be sure to get organized, set goals with your child and have regular check-ins to assess progress.

10. Know where to get help.  There is often support offered at schools that goes beyond the classroom.  Make sure to find out what is offered at your school.  Of course there is also your local Sylvan Learning Centre, which can offer on going tutoring when the student needs a real boost in confidence or just a single 'homework help' session to get a grasp on a particularly difficult concept.
