Here at the Oak Centre RV Mall we hope your season continues to be everything you wished for. Once you are back home it will be time for most to store your rig away till next season. I will touch on some basic procedures here to remind any seasoned veterans or assist those new to the RVing lifestyle.

While a good cleanup is nice and makes your rig seem neater when you re-open in spring, it is even more important to get all groceries and food residues out and cleaned up. Mice are able to smell food and can sneak through what seems to be impossibly small openings. Aside from the mess they will leave, they can also wreak havoc inside your unit.

There are numerous ways to ensure you have no rodent issues, aside from the thorough cleaning. Dealers can provide a sachet-type product that offers essential oil smells. These chase mice away yet are harmless to pets and small people. Another solution is having the dealer spray the underside of the coach with a product that also stops the mice before they even attempt entry. You can further reduce the likelihood of mice by staying away from grass and brush when choosing where to leave your RV for the winter. While I have no experience with electronic emitters that chase mice away, there are people who tell me they work well. Just be sure you will have continuous power or there may be a window of time that allows mice to move in.

Moving on, remember that once the unit is winterized it is strongly recommended that you remove the deep cycle 12v battery and get it inside a warmer environment to prolong its life for extra years. It will likely drain down if it stays hooked up and is therefore susceptible to early cell failure due to cold temperatures.

RVs have a Carbon Monoxide / smoke detector that has a 9v battery as a power source. You may want to disconnect this and reconnect in spring. Side note – I've been informed that 9v batteries are a possible fire hazard as they can potentially short across the terminals and cause heat and sparking. They should be taped across the top to eliminate this concern in your RV and your house.

Winterization is a subject of its own, but I have a reminder that I will slide in here in case you tackle this project soon. Often, people servicing their own RV will run antifreeze through the lines and complete the flow through each tap-set and toilet. However, every so often we sell a new outside shower assembly to someone who simply forgot about this area. This can easily happen, as in some cases it is a rarely used option.
