The cooler weather is an early signal to start preparing for the new season ahead.

Your furnace may have fired up by now, and the smell of settled dust burning off the heat exchanger reminds you that you may need a seasonal tune up.

Of course, furnaces are never “maintenance free” some important things to consider to prepare your furnace for heating season are:

  1. Check and replace furnace air filter (Plugged and dirty filters are the leading cause of furnace overheating)

  1. Remove front door panels and inspect for cleanliness, water leakage, corrosion, or signs of heat scorching on the sides of the burner panel (heat scorching could be a sign of a cracked heat exchanger)

  2. Replace the lower panel, turn thermostat on, and watch the burner flame. It should be solid blue with a slight orange tip.

  1. Listen to the motor(s) and note if there are any unusual sounds. If so, professional service may be necessary.

  1. Replace the batteries in your thermostat. Most modern (digital) thermostats require new batteries every couple years.

  1. Turn on humidifier, clean and replace pad if needed.

This short list of preventative maintenance can be done once or twice a year, however with most modern furnaces, professional service is important to test other functions such as motor performance, flame sensing, and safety functions.
