Halloween Fun for Everyone
Halloween can be loads of fun for children of any age. It can also be very overwhelming for children with sensory processing disorders. Here are a few tips for making Halloween a success for all children:
- If your child does not like the feel of costumes, try getting them a festive Halloween t-shirt instead. You could also consider a costume made of lycra (a material that is known to be therapeutic for children with sensory needs) or a sweat suit. It's Halloween, be creative!
- There is often lots of noise when out trick or treating. If your child is sensitive to noise, try a costume that incorporates ear muffs (think something with ears!). This can create participation without triggering a meltdown.
- Practice trick or treating. Make a social story to help explain the rules of trick or treating and the have them practice by coming to your door, or you could try with a friend or neighbour's door.
- If this is all too much, consider throwing a sensory friendly Halloween party. That way, your child can still participate in the festivities while in a comfortable environment.
- Remember that all children may not like Halloween, and that is okay too. Trying to force your child to do something they don't like will not be fun anymore!
