The importance of the “Cold Chain”
Have you ever wondered how flowers from other parts of the world can survive all the way to your local florist? For cut flowers to arrive to your flower shop looking their best, they must be cooled down from the farm to the florist. We use the term “cold chain” which refers to the transportation of temperature sensitive products.
Flowers are pre-cooled at the farm level, refrigerated during shipping, at the departing airport and after they arrive at their destination country. They are then loaded onto refrigerated trucks for the trip to the wholesalers coolers and then to the florist.
Temperatures are very important for fresh cut flowers. If the cold chain is not followed, it will affect the flower's vase life. Long delays on hot airport tarmacs, or non air conditioned cargo holding areas for hours on end, starts a downward spiral on vase life that can't be recaptured.
Once you receive your flowers, be sure to change your water out every few days and clean your vase with a little bleach and dishwater to kill bacteria. Display your flowers in a cool part of the house and don't expose it to cold or hot temperatures.
I hope your flower ordering experience is a great one. Call us today at 403-340-0773 and send flowers that go from your heart….to theirs.
