Hill Avenue Drugs first opened its doors in 1953. As can be expected over a sixty-year time span, there have been many changes. The City of Regina has expanded and grown, but Hill Avenue Drugs has remained an important part of the Lakeview Community. As an independent business, we try to provide a memorable experience for all our patients – whether they have been coming here since the 1950's or just came through our doors for the first time today.

Following renovations in 1997, Hill Avenue Drugs has a very unique style that hearkens back to the pharmacies of yesteryear – rich wood fixtures, carefully selected colours, and attention to detail adorn our pharmacy's walls. Our friendly and welcoming staff are happy to help you with prescription needs, over the counter questions, or even helping you pick out a gift from our wonderful gift shop populated with many different items – vintage and unique toys, jewellery, scarves, handbags, and much more.

When Hill Avenue Drugs first opened, the process of mass production of drugs was in its infancy. Previous to this, pharmacists made the majority of medications right in the dispensary using raw materials. Once mass production started, drug companies began to make drugs on a massive scale in large industrial plants. Although this increased patients' access to a variety of different medications, it also led to a “one-size fits all” approach to many different drug therapies. Pharmacists quickly became dispensers of medications rather than the preparer of medications.

In the last thirty years, compounding has once again become more popular. Compounding pharmacies reflect the profession's beginning – using raw materials to prepare medications in the pharmacy to provide an individual experience for the patient to meet their specific needs. For patients who are unable to swallow capsules, we have compounded liquid or suspension forms of their medication to ensure compliance. Pediatric patients often require the same medications as adults, but the doses for their little bodies are a fraction of the smallest pill made by drug manufacturers. And trying to split tablets into eighths to give your infant an accurate dose on a regular basis is very difficult. This is another instance that we can compound liquids to ensure that your little one is getting an accurate dose. In many cases, we can make the liquids to be pleasant tasting to made administration easier.

There are other patients who have difficulties swallowing pills – I`m thinking of a smaller, four-legged, usually furry variety. Yes, we can make compounding for your cats, dogs, guinea pigs, rats, ferrets, and even birds. Some animals do quite well with liquid medications with animal friendly tastes such as beef, liver, chicken or fish. Some are even fussier – we`re looking at you, cats! For those pets where oral administration is a dreaded part of the day, we can provide some medications in a gel that can be rubbed on the inside of your pet`s ear.

All products we make require an active prescription, and can be either a new prescription or refills transferred from another pharmacy if required. We are more than happy to work with you to individualize the product, and if your doctor or other prescriber has any questions regarding compounding options, we are available for collaboration directly with them as well. Come by, or give us a call at 306-586-6262, to discuss options with our pharmacists Andrew, Janice, Gavin or Michaeline, or to bask in the glow of a unique and inviting pharmacy. We are here seven days a week – Monday to Friday 9AM to 9PM, Saturday 9AM to 6PM, Sunday 1PM to 5PM, and closed statutory holidays. We look forward to meeting you!
