Summer in Saskatchewan seemed to have started early this year. With +30 Weather in the spring and a predicted hotter and drier summer we are all looking forward to enjoying a lot of fun in the sun! However, we now have to be even more careful when it comes to sun safety. For the first time in 20 years, The Canadian Cancer Society, along with 27 Other organizations, including Cancer Care Ontario and the Canadian Dermatology Association, collaborated to come up with new sun protection updates.

Many people may not realize that the sun in Canada is hot enough to cause skin cancer and that skin cancer is the most common cancer in Canada. There Is some good news though! Most skin cancers can be prevented; all we have to do is limit our UV exposure.

Check the UV Index before heading outside. Try to avoid being in the sun when the UV Index is 3 Or more. This used to be between 11AM And 4PM. New guidelines now recommend this time frame between 11AM And 3PM.

Use sunscreen! SPF 15 Has been the recommendation for over 2 Decades but not anymore! Experts® now say we need to aim for at least an SPF of 30. An SPF 30 Would cover off about 97 Per cent of UVB rays, while an SPF 15 Covers about 93 Per cent. Both Coverages are strong, but the experts worry about applying enough of the product. The average adult needs about 2 or 3 tablespoons of sunscreen to cover their body and a teaspoon to cover their face and neck. Lotions and creams can be better than sprays. Spray-on sunscreens make it difficult to know how much has been applied or if a spot has been missed. There's also concern that spray sunscreens could lead to kids and adults inhaling certain chemicals triggering allergies, asthma and other concerns.

Don't underestimate the power of clothing. Clothing provides better protection than sunscreen. Cover up as much of your skin as you can with tightly woven or UV protective labeled clothing. If Light doesn't seep through the fabric, then you are in the clear. And don't forget the wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses!

Go have fun this summer but don't forget to be sun smart and safe! See our pharmacists at Cheetham's Pharmacy for a recommendation on a sunburn cream. See them today to get the best sunscreen so you can enjoy the outdoors pain free
