Fall Bulbs: “Plant Now for Early Spring Colour”

Fall bulbs arrive in Garden Centres late August, early September. These bulbs can not be planted in spring because they require a long period of cold temperatures.

Planting

Plant bulbs in well drained soil. If you have heavy clay soil, improve it by adding compost or zeolite. It looks more natural when bulbs are planted in odd numbered clusters rather than in a straight row. Always check the package for planting depth and spacing that your bulb requires. Add Bone Meal or Bulb Booster food at the bottom of a planting hole to get the roots started. “Bulb Dust” which is an insecticide and fungicide, should be dusted on the bulb to control insects, root and bulb rot. This dust should also be used when storing any bulb over winter.

After Spring Blooming

After spring blooming, allow the foliage to die back naturally. The leaves produce nutrients for future growth and flower production for the following year. Dried brown foliage indicates that the nutrients are stored in the bulb and are dormant. At this time, clean up is easy.
