Key Messages: Back To School

The best back-to-school preparation is gearing up your child's learning momentum and priming their brains to get them ready for the school year ahead. Back-to-school preparation is more than simply buying new clothes and school supplies - it's about a change in your daily routine and preparing your children mentally before school starts.

Kids can spend up to two months simply re-adjusting to academic schedules - rather than jumping into learning from day one.  This can cause learning gaps and students can fall behind their peers. Don't let last year's problems repeat this year.  Parents can remind themselves of trouble spots by re-reading last year's final report card.

It can be difficult to get back into the mood for learning, so the sooner children are prepared to learn, the easier the transition to the classroom will be. Get back into routines: Home habits are as important as learning habits because they have an impact on how a child performs in school. Look at sleeping and eating habits

  • Use an alarm clock to avoid oversleeping

  • Eat breakfast to keep the mind alert

  • Make lunches the night before

  • Plan clothing choices the night before to avoid the morning rush

  • Determine a spot for the book bag. Make sure that it is packed with everything your student needs for the next day, before going to sleep

Begin early. It is never too late to implement positive changes that can lead to better grades.  However, the earlier that you get on track, the easier it is to stay there!

Get informed. Communicate with teachers to find important school dates (big projects, standardized testing) well in advance to avoid last-minute scrambles.

Use a family calendar or technology to ensure important dates and activities are loaded into everyone's schedule.

Break bad habits.  Don't fall back into old routines and bad habits.  Start this year with a fresh and new positive routine.  Good routines are just as easy to form as bad ones!

Get help-Don't wait and see! If a child had difficulties last year, get help from day one and get on the path to a better school year.
