It is always interesting when I have the opportunity to talk with disciplined, focused, and successful business men and women. These conversations are enlightening on many levels. Perhaps the most eyes opening to me is that these conversations quickly reveal the lack of attention, well-intentioned, men and women give to things beyond the temporal.

One of the secrets to living a truly fulfilling life is to discover that the temporary will never adequately define us. The cars we drive the jobs we work and the people we know will never give us more than a quick “hit” that will leave us scrambling for answers when the cold winds of tough times begin to blow.

Early in my career as a contractor, my wife and I purchased a house that had massive cracks in the foundation walls and was leaning forward 5 1/2 inches. As we began the task of repairing the issues, we also discovered that the concrete basement walls had no rebar in them and the entire front of the house had been built on a ravine. The ravine had been filled in with clay and rotten logs. Suffice it to say, we had to tear the whole foundation out and start again with an engineered foundation that went down to solid ground.

It is disappointing to think that a builder would neglect to check the quality of ground that he is building upon, but it is far more disappointing to watch as the majority of people around us build their entire lives on equally faulty foundations. Faulty, not because they are bad people, but faulty because they never take the time to examine what they are building their lives on.

Have you ever gone past the question of “How did I get here” and asked, “Why am I here”? Have you ever felt like there was more to life than what you have experienced so far? Have you ever felt there was a greater purpose to your life? I want to challenge you to examine the foundation on which you have built your life. These questions are a great place to start.

The foundation of a person's life will be discovered to be faulty when it is built on the temporary markers of success and not on the lasting foundation of a relationship with the architect and designer of life, Jesus Christ.
