Suicide is a complicated issue which cannot be a result of any one single cause. According to the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention, 11 Canadians will die by suicide today and another 210 will attempt suicide. Out of each death that is a result of suicide, 7 – 10 survivors are overwhelmingly affected.
Suicide survivors often face and experience distinctive grief challenges that differ from those who have been bereaved by other types of death.
The feelings of grief, sadness and disbelief can also be accompanied by overwhelming guilt, shame, anger, rejection as well as emotional numbness. Add to this, additional complications of stigma and trauma.
In order to help support and assist those who are working through a suicide bereavement, Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel has joined with Lynett Getz RSW to offer a 12 week Suicide Grief and loss group starting the evening of Wednesday November 16th. This group is limited to 10 participants and you will need to pre-register to attend by calling 403 580 0398.
There is also a Wednesday morning drop in Grief Coffee group that will start up on November 16th that all are welcome to attend. This group runs from 10:30 – 12:00 at the Saamis Creekside Centre. Please call 403 528 2599 for more information.
