Recently, the reader board out front of Chinook Village read, “Want to hear a good story? Spend time with a senior.”
By the time you become a senior, you will have accumulated so many life experiences that could and should be shared with others. These experiences become the basis for stories that can be handed down from generation to generation and form a part of collective history.
For example, a senior tells of being a tail gunner in a Lancaster bomber and how he escaped from the plane when it was shot down. Other seniors tell stories as children living in war torn countries. Many tell of experiences going hungry or recall the day when the war was declared over. Stories of sadness and heartbreak. Stories of laughter and happiness. And everything in between.
As human beings, we try to find meaning in life experiences whether good or bad and celebrating our stories is one way of doing that.
November brings Remembrance Day and it is celebrated with our residents to honor those who served in various capacities to ensure our country remains free. Our Remembrance Day service is held in the Terrace Room where our residents who served in the Forces are recognized. We welcome the public to join us and would be more than happy to recognize those who have served and even those who are currently serving.
So, is there value in recalling and sharing experiences? We certainly believe there is. Opportunities are provided in our community living setting for residents to share experiences with each other and, at times, with the younger generations.
Sharing with peers provides affirmation that you are a real person with value and that you are not alone. Sharing with the younger generation also provides value as wisdom is passed along and relationships are built.
Chinook Village is a great place to share life experiences. Great stories are told here!
We would be happy to discuss community living with you to see if it would be a fit for you.
